Those who are curious can read my good-byes (Parts One and Two) over at Story of the Day. I've moved on to what I believe will be greener pastures over at Violent History, my first original content project and one that I expect to be very rewarding in the weeks, months, and who-knows-how-much-longer to come. There will occasionally be music and other unrelated material posted in the sidebar over there (once things are up and running in a week), but they will be updated even less frequenty than the weekly posts I made here.

TotW continues to get over 30 daily first-time visitors each day by nature of its googlable lyrics (for which I've received many grateful emails), so I apologize to those who will miss it. I strongly recommend shifting your attention over to Street Knowledge, an excellent music weblog that was frequently the original source for material posted here. I would also love to hear from some of you over at Violent History. Whether or not that is the case, I'll leave these pages up because of their great popularity among googlers. And that's all, folks.

Peace,
Isaac

Love Me, I'm a Liberal

"Love Me, I'm a Liberal"
performed by Evan Greer (original lyrics I came across this song, a remake of my very favorite song ever written, quite by accident this week while searching for New England artists to bring to a concert organized by friends at the Maine Peace Action Committee and the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine. A lot of my new friends in PA are fairly confused when they hear me picking on liberals and liberalism when they know that I'm somewhere to the left of center. This song is partly for them, to give them an introduction to where I'm coming from. It is also partly for my longtime friends and fellow activists who don't know this song (or at least this version) because I know it will put a smile on your faces. Last but not least, this song goes out to all the liberals-- even the ones I love-- because you need to hear it.

One People,
One Struggle,
Isaac

C.I.A. Who's left? The NRA, the ATF, the AMA?
OK, OK, it's all irrelevant
Cause in the new millennium there'll be no Central Intelligence

(download mp3)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This track comes from the first Lyricist Lounge mixtape put out by Rawkus Records in 1998. That album is excellent and features good stuff from Common, Jurassic 5, Sarah Jones, and Talib Kweli. The second volume is good too, with work from Mos Def, Dead Prez, and lots of other great artists. As with anything from Rawkus there's a mix of the mediocre and the downright offensive in there as well, but this is still one of my favorite albums. For those who liked Last Emp, he finally dropped his debut solo album Music, Magic, Myth two years ago. It's excellent, though almost completely apolitical, but unlike much of the industry (even indie / underground) it's at least not negative. It's definitely worth picking up. KRS has gone downhill in recent years and hasn't put out much of note, and we are all still waiting on Zack's absurdly postponed solo album in collaboration with DJ Shadow. I do have some unreleased material from Zack's post-RATM career, though, and that will make it's way to these pages shortly.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://totw2.blogspot.com/2005/12/cia-criminals-in-action.html' title='C.I.A. They look like dorks but that is kind of the point. They are hilarious and brilliant and clever and radical and thoughtful and all kinds of other good things. I went to see them live at UMaine out of sympathy to friends who had organized the event and thought I would hate it, but I had as much fun as I've had at a concert in a long time. I'd like to be able to link these song lyrics to relevant news articles online, so if anyone could give me a hand finding those I would be grateful. Conor's is a homegrown Midwestern radicalism that seems to crop up once in a generation and deliver America some of the greatest lyricists of an era. He is no exception. If you like this track, check out their debut album Read Music | Speak Spanish. The album was recorded in the week after 9/11, a gut-check moment for Oberst: "It felt weird—I thought, Is it O.K. to release this anti-American album now? But then I realized that it was the most American thing you can do: dissent and progress."

If you're more into the Bright Eyes sound, go back to "Let's Not Shit Ourselves" (from Lifted), the title track from I'm Wide Awake, or these videos of Conor performing "When the President Talks to God" and "The Trees Get Wheeled Away" on Leno and Letterman, respectively. For another sample of Desaparecidos fare, check out "Man and Wife: The Former (Financial Planning)".

Though he's made his career on raw lyrics dealing with personal and usually romantic relationships, Conor has used all of his public performances to project the most political of his work. Whether or not he follows RM|SS with another Desaparecidos album, it's clear that future Bright Eyes projects will be increasingly socially conscious.

Is It For Freedom?

"Is It For Freedom?"
by Sara Thomsen

<img style="cursor:pointer;
